As I approach 2007, I have begun to once again sense the excitement of a new year and a new beginning. What will the year hold for me and my family? What will it hold for me professionally? I have always taken time at the end of the year to reflect on where I have been and where I am going. I started with the editorial board of Disease-a-Month in the 1990’s when Erich Brueschke, MD, was the editor and I was the assistant editor. At the time I was working in Chicago and my son was in grade school. In 2001, I had the honor of becoming the editor in chief. 5 years later, I am now in Washington, DC, and my son is off to his first semester in college. 5 years seems to have gone by quickly but in reflections decisions have been made, courses of thought and action taken, changes made. Disease-a-Month has been a constant companion over these years. I have had the opportunity to work with wonderful authors, review complicated, informative, academic articles, and work with the patient and steadfast staff at Elsevier. It has been a challenging but rewarding time. Five years is a good time to step back and look for renewal in any organization and so I have worked with the staff to recruit someone I have known for years and believe has the skills, inquisitive intelligence and leadership to take Disease-a-Month to its next level. Jerry Leiken, MD, is an emergency room physician and toxicologist who meets all these characteristics and has graciously agreed to take on the editorship. I am enthusiastic for him and Disease-a-Month and know that they will bring to you on a consistent basis high quality and thoughtful reviews. And last but not least I wish to thank Jami Walker my publisher from Elsevier. Jamie has been cheerful, hard working, honest, intelligent, patient and someone I have been honored and blessed to know and work with at Disease-a-Month.
