Foreword
Article Outline
Since being identified in 1984, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), especially HIV-1, has been the focus regarding the transmission, diagnosis and treatment of the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). This retrovirus is transmitted by direct transfer or exchange of bodily fluids.
Over the past two decades, disease management of the HIV infected patient has evolved from episodic infectious care to chronic management (not unlike Diabetes Mellitus). What was primarily an anti-viral medication approach to therapy now involves multidisciplinary management.
This monograph details a comprehensive approach to the management of the patient with HIV disease and is reprinted for the current edition of Conn’s Current Therapy 2008.
